Final Blog

What do you think is the most important thing you learned through this WebQuest?

I learned that it can actually be a cool idea to work this way because I learned that you could mix school with very innovative tools such as blogs and get a really good deal because its a diary of what you think and felt, it is a record of the things you are doing throughout class, and most important how to hel develop yourself in order to work in teams, even though I changed teams I liked working with both of them and now I can laugh at the past because I have now some anecdotes that I learned from personally.

Would you recommend the use of a WebQuest to learn Mathematics or some other Science subject? Why?

Of course I would, I mean I really don’t have the time in certain situations to start a blog, a metro or myspace but anyways in this case I had to, and it really helped me because I was recording my thoughts, feelings and what I went through on the week. Besides having a personal journal you vinculate it with the class and see the results you are getting and how it changes you, and another important thing, it makes you think what you have to rearrange in order to get school tasks completed. Another thing is that for people who don’t like school but like to be on the internet in stuff like myspace and metros, you could say that it’s a cool tool to be used and apply it for educational needs because without people knowing they would start to get in the schooling environment and unconsciously will start to get very close to the subjects and eventually will end up practicing a lot in the subject.

What can your teacher do to improve the project? Any suggestions?

Well I don’t think that there could be any other thing but to inspire the students, which she did but sometimes ask by week “Hey, how did you feel about your blog?” or asking “Hey, do you look forward doing your blog?” (even though it’s a responsibility) and ask why sometimes people don’t want to do it because I saw that some people didn’t have any other motivation to do it but the grade, so I think that could be one thing that could be added. Another thing is that it would be very cool if the other methods of body temperature and other procedures to obtain the time of death could be seen in class, because I found these topics very interesting and could take normal calculus into a more applied method, just like the project but in this case would help us in class at school. And as for the movie, well I liked it a lot, and I think that this project could develop a club in the school, that is not drama club, but one more into movies and things like that because I loved it. But if you asked me I think that the project was cool, minimal things like the ones I mentioned could be attached to it.

Thanks Linda :D

P.S. Even though I loved the project I hope I don’t have to do another one at summer, lol :D

Grant's Diagram! :D

Hey there!! Guess what? Today we've been all day rehearsing and trying to give real space to what we will do in our project, I know you might have been thinking, and how will they do that? Isn’t that difficult? Well to tell you the truth it is actually difficult and demanding but we find a way to plan ourselves together and have everything that we will do in an organized way with a specific diagram; Grant's Diagram. This diagram helps us focus on what we will really do, and gives us a clear image of the process and procedure done for every specific thing and participating role in the movie and exercises we will perform our calculus final project. Behold, and watch our awesome creation we hope you like it and we accept suggestions: D!!

p.s. teacher I had to post it again because in the other entry the picture didn't show at all.

The Roll of Newton's Law of Cooling

1. What is the Newton’s Law of Cooling?
Newton law of cooling is a principle that states by mathematical problems the possible time of death. According these data’s you can verify other missing data: the room temperature, time of death, decreasing constant, temperatures, times, etc. This is specific used in forensic science because of his unique data’s and accurate way to find data.

2. What variables in your problem correspond with the variables in the Newton’s Law of Cooling?
All of them, because we depend on the data to get the approximating time when the person was murdered, constant that affected the corpse and might even help us find out how the victim was killed.

3. According to this Law, at what time approximately the death happened?
4:53 am

4. How does the room temperature affect the time of death?
The room temperature can change, it can be too hot and drastically can turn very cold, and that it definitely will have a negative effect on the body time of death, because of the body decomposition. It ether accelerate the decompose of the corpse or can delay it.

5. How does an illness (e.g. fever) affect the time of death?
Because as same as the room temperature it may probably change, a healthy person is more probably to get an exact time of death than a sick person., this is because an illness may increase body warm in metabolism or it may decreased making secondary factors affect decomposition.

6. How exact is the approximation of the Newton’s Law of Cooling for predicting the time of death?
It is very accurate depending on the data and the situation you are trying to solve. If the person is sick or the room temperature change then the method will not work.

Final Project!!

Team name:CSS (Crime Scene Students)

Team:-Pedro Esquivel: math expert (pedroysuamigocalculo.blogspot.com)

-Jaime Navarro: forensic scientist (jaimeelduende.blogspot.com)

-Jose Pedro Villareal: journalist (josepedropp.blogspot.com)
-Ruth de Leon: media expert (ruthdeleon90.blogspot.com)

1. What is forensic science?

An application of science and math to find answers in crime to things that do not appear to have an immediate answer in criminal cases.

2. What kind of evidence can be collected in a murder case?

Hair, blood, bullets, clothes, digital footprints, fingerprints, and saliva

3. Why is important to determine the time of death?

To find out the possible assassins, reasons why the person was murdered, to know if its related to another crime and bring the whole case down and finished.

Also to look for possible witnesses, to find out how the person got into the situation and to find out all the possible evidence related to the victims life and fin out other possible candidates that might pass through the same thing. And to determine who is in this case the victim, and who is the aggressor.

4. What methods are commonly used to find the time of death?

· Rate method: measuring events like: body temperature, rigor mortis and putrefaction
· Concurrence method: comparing the occurrence of events that took place at know time

5. What factors are considered in Algor Mortis?
*Size of the body

*Humidity of the air

*Movement of the air

*Immersion in water

*Clothing and coverings

6. How does the environment affect the time of death?

The climate is the main factor that affects a corpse. If the climate is too cold the body will take longer to decompose, if it’s too hot I will be decompose inmaximum 3 days.

7. What can you tell about the different methods of temperature reading of the body? Do they make a difference in the results? All of them get to the same result but use different data to obtain it.They are basically the same, but it is used according to certain data you have or depending the situation because you can use only of this types of methods.

The Goal…
I believe that the goal of this final project is to give calculus a specific and practical application, and most important, a fun application since a lot of people always bring up the commentary that suggests that calculus will not help us in life, and I believ that this project will indeed give us an explanation and will serve as an example to let us know how people apply calculus in their daily life.

I also believe that it’s a way to make us have fun on a project, and do something unique and unusual, something different from regular final projects.

last week!!:P

Hey, what's up!!well as we all know last week was filled with a lot of surprises, I really felt weird, I`m not kidding you I barely slept like a maximum of 10 hours in the whole week, because first of all we had like a zillion of homework and partial proyects, besides that we had to study for the exams and at the same time the biggest award, going to Guadalajara. So if we see it in a certain way, all the effort was worth it because with it came the trip. The bad thing of it was that I got kind of sick, barely could speak form all the yelling and laughing which is affecting me now, but hey!!Who is going to take the fun away from it!!!lol:D!! oooo and on the trip we had such a great time, we talked for hours and told urban legends, that reminds me, today its not thursday, but yesterday, we had to watch out for the LECHUSAS!!l.o.l. I will upgrado some pics later on from the trip, because I forgot the cable, I hope you all had an awesome time.:D see ya!!

♫Yesterday, all the troubles were so far away!!♫

Hi!!!here are some pics from yesterday, yesterday was great!! but, really got me tired. Yesterday we went to Fatima's house to study for our calculus exam, that exam really has gotten all of us studying like you´ve got no clue lol!! but we had an awesome time because we got to pet this little donkey and rabbit, they were very friendly, but anyway we took our distance hahaha!well, not me although we thought the donkey was going to kick me or something like that, good thing that she didn´t.You should've been there! You know, there's something funny, while we were petting this awesome animals the stress we kind of had went away,I guess it was because they felt kind of fluffy. And, that made us concentrate a bit more!! So, if you are kind of stressed pet your pet, this helps alot.

When we went back to our places we were talking about some urban leyends, and some fatal accidents that had happened throught the road we were on, because we happened to see an accident.Talking about those urban leyends was pretty intense hahaha, because who would knew that exactly on the road that we were on like 2 months ago at the intersection a little girl crosses the road when you less expect it,and,BOOM!! that causes you to crash!! and you guessed right, that little girls is an anima or ghost, a lost soul that suffered an accident of the same type.Pretty scary huh? well, it kind of is when you are on that same spot and an accident has ocured at that exact same moment. Hahahaha, so as you can see yesterday was great, we had an amazing time and I loved it because I got to be with some of my friends, see the donkey hahaha, pet the rabbits, study a bit of calculus, went out for a spin and even saw some cockfighting!! so yesterday was a pretty active day, I hope yours was too!!
